We are a family owned and operated butterfly farm situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. We have been breeding butterflies since 1998. All presentations and materials are prepared by owner Sarah J. Butcher. Sarah has an undergraduate degree in biology from Sweet Briar College and completed graduate work in entomology from the University of Maryland, College Park. She has been presenting entomology and science programs in the Virginia public school system since 1992. Assisting Sarah is her husband, Stephen, who is the all around master gardener and behind the scenes guy. Without his hours of grimy hard work and the utilization of skills earned during a Naval & Marine Corps career, the wonder and beauty of our butterflies would not exist.
Dear Ms. Butcher, Thank you for coming to my school. I learned that the state butterfly was a tiger swallowtail. I enjoyed holding the butterfly. I learned how to tell a butterfly from a moth. I liked learning about migration. I learned that there was 101 species of butterflies. Thank you for teaching which butterflies are poisonous. Sincerely, Alexandra Dear Ms. Butcher, Thank you for coming in today and showing us all of the things. I liked when we played the game. Also when you let us hold the butterflies. I liked when you showed us all of the kinds of butterflies. Also you told us the state butterfly, the state butterfly is the Tiger Swallowtail. I learned that there are 101 species of butterflies. Sincerely, Andrea Dear Ms. Butcher, Thank you for taking the time to show us different butterflies. I learned how butterflies travel. I learned that some butterflies get tired from traveling so they don't make it back. I had so much fun I hope to see you again. Sincerely, Dianne
