Butterflies have special meanings in numerous different cultures and religions throughout the world.   The Native American Legend is one of the predominant poems recited at events.

Native American Legend

If one desires a wish to come true, they must first capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it.

Since a butterfly can make no sound, the butterfly can not reveal the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit who hears and sees all.

In gratitude for giving the beautiful butterfly its freedom, the Great Spirit grants the wish.

So, according to this Native American legend, by making a wish and giving the butterfly its freedom, the wish will be taken to the heavens and granted.

Other Readings

Below are two examples of alternative poems and prayers that can be recited at a release.  We have a collection from which you may choose, so please contact us.

I am not there

Do not stand by my grave and weep

For I am not there.

I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am diamonds that glint on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning hush

I am the swift uplifting rush of butterflies in joyous flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.

I am not there.

I did not die.

-Adopted from Mary Elizabeth Frye's poem "I am not there."

A Butterfly Blessing

Lord,

Bless me with the ability of a butterfly to endure the changes that will happen to me in my lifetime.  Help me to accept these changes with a positive and loving attitude.

Bless me with the beauty of a butterfly to allow me to reflect the colors of my soul, being and individuality, and to look for these things in others.

Bless me with the ability of a butterfly to create and instill the feeling of wonder, passion, and excitement towards all of your living creatures.

Bless me with the butterflies' ability to pollinate your flowers, so that I may cultivate your human garden with love and compassion.

Last, but not least, Lord,

Bless me with the grace of ascension, so that I may ascend into your glorious heaven like a rising butterfly, when my journey here on earth, is complete.

Amen
